A Transformational Leader:
A Transfomational Leader is someone who focuses on the group’s collective success rather than individual success, as well as empowering group members to reach their potential.
In his book “An Astronauts Guide To Life On Earth” Chris Hadfield talks about wanting the people around you to be successful, to help to build others up so that everyone can be successful not just a select few. So he fits the transformational leader archetype perfectly.
Why I Identify With His Leadership Style:
I feel that when I lead a team or am a part of a team that my personal style is to help make sure that everyone is successful. I try to find out what they really like to do and what skills they bring to the table, and then work with them to find tasks that will best suit their skills. I have always enjoyed seeing the look on one of my swim students faces when they finally accomplish something they have been trying to do after seeing them struggle with it for a time. Knowing that I helped them get there just fills me with so much happiness and excitement because you share in their success, you built them up and helped them gain some more confidence in their abilities. There is no other feeling like it for me
Quotes That Demonstrate Chris Hadfield Is A Transformational Leader:
“There are always different ways to solve given problems. People have different skills, backgrounds and expertise … and if you can give them enough autonomy, time at the wheel, patience and feedback, you may in fact change the direction everybody is going because you see it’s better than the one you originally chose.”
- Chris Hadfield, Astronaut
"It's not enough to shelve your own competitive streak. You have to try, consciously, to help others succeed. Some people feel this is like shooting themselves in the foot - why aid someone else in creating a competitive advantage? I don't look at it that way. Helping someone else look good doesn't make me look worse. In fact, it often improves my own performance."
-Chris Hadfield, Astronaut
